true story

Matt and I rescued a baby squirrel last night.

Seriously.

It was so sad!  We were on our walk (because the weather was so nice, I begged him to walk after work with me and he did.)  So there we go, just walking...and in the middle of the sidewalk was the baby squirrel.  We think he must have fallen from the tree overhead and we think one of his back legs was broken.  But he was still alive and trying to crawl off the sidewalk!  The thought of a huge dog or human foot squashing him was more than I could bear.  So Matt and I used sticks to make a stretcher sort of thing and we moved him to the base of the tree.

Sad story right?

We hope that one of the THOUSAND other squirrels came over to check on him when we left.

In my dreams, they all gathered together and took him to a safe place so that his leg could heal and he could grow up to play with the other squirrels.  Much like the story of little Nemo the clown fish with the bum fin.

Moral of this story?  Always look down when walking.  We *could* have stepped on the little guy.  Also, baby squirrels are really cute!  It did cross my mind to take him home with us.

I obviously failed to tell you the story of your dear Uncle Dan. When he was around 13 yrs. old the dogs in the yard were having a grand 'ol time with a baby squirrel. Dan went to rescue the pitiful baby squirrel and when he scooped it up in his hands the sweet little thing bit him. Not only did it bite him, it held on and wouldn't let go with his teeth in Dan's hand! Dan came running in the house with the squirrel hanging from his hand and Nana (my mom) beat the squirrel off of him with a broom! (Yes, she killed it). Because of the danger of rabies and the fact that we had to take it to Montgomery, AL, 11/2 hours away it had to stay frozen in our freezer for a week or two until we could get to Montgomery to have it tested. Thankfully, it did not have rabies and Dan was in the clear. He never rescued a squirrel again! I'm glad the little precious did not bite you or Matt!!!
