30 on the 26th

Happy Birthday Matt!

Matt's Birthday was this past Tuesday. We celebrated by going to lunch at this breakfast/lunch place, First Watch. I don't need to tell you that we love breakfast food and could eat it all day long. We battled a bad cold (as in all 3 of us got it in some form) all weekend and we were so glad to be feeling better enough to brave the land of the living. Anyway, little Graham enjoyed gnawing on a set of keys we made for him as well as going through several of the paper coasters, while Matt and I enjoyed some brunchy food. Yum.

The family celebration was a Sunday lunch at the Steel's. As usual, the birthday person chose the meal and Matt's taste buds were right on. We had filet mignon, grilled veggies, salad and bread. Oh, and blackberry cobbler for dessert. It was delish!

This is a big birthday year for my Matt... he's... wait for it... 30.  That's right. I like to joke with him that he's soooo old.  He's not, and he doesn't mind my kidding him.

Here is a fun list of 30 fun things about Matt...

1. He started his own design business, Metagramme, and so far he's doing great!

2. He hates to get up early...I mean hates.  And by early, I mean any time before 8:30.

3. I love watching him become a better father every day.

4. Sometimes he sleeps in socks.  Like last night.

5. He loves surfing.....and may well up if he thinks about his lack of surfing in our marriage.

6. He loves to make people laugh but is quiet in crowds.

7. He recently made the switch from 1% to skim milk at my insistence that skim is just better.  He said that he could taste the goodness of the extra percent.

8. Sam Adams Lite is his favorite beer.

9. He picked up pipe smoking in the last year and loves it.  I also think he smells oh so good after smoking it....

10. He loves to read.

11. He loves to read to me.

12. He thinks I watch too much TV.

13. He doesn't believe me that he's wrong about #12.

14. He loves hot sauce.  Loves it.

15. One wouldn't know it for our small yard, but he loves  to work in the yard.  It's pretty sad that mowing ours takes 20 minutes.

16. He has a lead foot.

17. He picks out cars based on their ability to look good with surfboards on top.

18. He hates to read my blog because I put two spaces after a period.  I was taught this in all years of school but he insists that the standard was changed.

19. He sleeps like a dead man.

20. He loves to grill.

21. He loves to sit under his dad's preaching.

22. Cards are very important to him (like for Birthdays, anniversaries and such)

23. He loves picking out cards for other people but *usually* waits until the absolute last minute before going to get one.  That's right, he's one of those guys picking through the scraps at 5:30 on Valentine's Day night.

24. He loves and respects his parents so much.

25. Leather Reef flip flops are his favorite.

26. He goes walking with me even though he doesn't see it so much as *exercise* like I do.

27. He scratches my back almost every night.  And also rubs my feet....he thinks I have a tactile disorder.

28. He loves me and tells me every day.

29. Almost every joint in his body cracks at any time.

30. He loves the Lord and spends time with Him and in the Word every day.

Hope y'all learn something fun about my Matt.  Here are some other pictures of our First Watch lunch...

Happy Birthday, Matt! And there are 2 spaces after a sentence. Graham-cracker keeps getting cuter!

Happy Matt day, Matt. That was one space after the period. That was two. Leslie, he's right on this one. I told you that many years ago.

Matt, have you checked out surfing on the Mississippi behind someone's boat wake?

Thanks! Les, you're correct about sentence spacing. Lindsay: the practice of double spacing after sentences is an antiquated approach that dates back to Victorian times, which was a dark age for design—and typography in particular. Prior to that time period (going back to Gutenberg's time in the early Renaissance), extra spaces were never stuffed between sentences. But some time around the reign of Queen Victoria, printers were trying to stuff pages full of unnecessary flotsam, and a bunch of folks who were new to the printing industry thought it would help legibility to add extra white space between sentences. However, it's since been proven that this draws attention to the white spaces and disrupts the flow of reading.

Take a look at any novel on your bookshelves; they're all single spaced after sentences. The practice of double spacing is still being taught in schools out of sheer stubborn tradition.

It's maddening for people like me who have to remove tons of double spaces every time I get some text for a piece I'm designing.

I'm sure that's way more than you ever wanted to know about sentence spacing! :)

Leslie, when I read all these things about Matt, I'm reminded how PERFECT yall are together! Matt, Happy 30th and I only put one space after periods.

Hehe, I just went back and read my post above. It seems I've revealed the enormity of my geekhood... In case anyone wasn't sure yet. ;)

Never knew the whole single space/double space thing. That's WV education for you... and I will forever be worried about this when I write... awesome.

Happy birthday!

Never thought that this blog would be about sentence spacing, but Matt is right on this one! Happy birthday Matt, may the Lord bless you guys with another year together and givin that little boy more kisses and cuddles!

Minus the surfing part...you and Darren are almost identical...and yeah, Darren thinks I watch too much TV too.

Happy birthday, Matt! I was going to write that I always use two spaces after a period, and that I like the way it looks, but apparently that's just not the way to go. Please don't change my post, Matt!

The other thing I was going to say was that Matt used to get up before the sun rose to go surfing in Rhode Island, and didn't seem to mind too much. Never would have guessed he had problems getting up in the morning. =)

Really enjoyed the pics too. Happy birthday!

Hey Sam! Well I guess getting up early is merely a matter of motivation... and the thought of a few waves to start the day is plenty for me :)
